The Power of Words
About The Artwork
A body of laws protecting women’s rights is not enough, we need to change our narrative. The dominant current narrative — created hundreds of years ago — positions women as subject to men’s authority at all times. It bans women from claiming their rights to be independent individuals and make decisions for themselves. Girls are taught to be followers, not leaders, through the use of disempowering words and texts.
- Through my art, I invite every woman and man to join me in rewriting the women’s narrative to reposition her as equal, independent individuals through empowering texts and words – to guide us towards a more fair and balanced society and give women a voice in her day.
- The new narrative – communicated through words and text in a light installation — are written by women and men, collected on line, and projected through light projector on the wall of the Erbil Citadel, gate side, on the 8th of March to show our demands, to change the narrative change, and to show our solidarity for women’s empowerment.
